Fried genius: Phoenix-area grocer hosting create-a-doughnut contest for kids

Bashas' Donut Flavor Craze Contest

If your kids have ever sat around the breakfast table dreaming up crazy new doughnut flavors, their time has arrived: A Phoenix-area grocery store wants those zany ideas.

Basha’s said Monday it would accept submissions for a new flavor of doughnut from kids aged 8-18 through May 13 for its Doughnut Flavor Craze Contest.

To submit, kids have to put together a 100-word description of their creation, including a name, ingredients and why they think their doughnut is the king of them all. Entries should be submitted online at bashas.com/flavorcraze.

Basha’s will pick 13 finalists — a baker’s dozen, anyone? — on May 16 and then will open the contest to a public vote on social media from May 17-20.

The winner will be announced on May 31.

And now the part you care about: the prizes.

The winner will receive a $100 Basha’s gift card and a free dozen doughnuts each month for one year. Their brainchild of fried goodness will also become the 60th doughnut in the store’s lineup.

The runner-up will receive a $75 gift card and third place will get a $50 gift card.

All of the finalists will get a $25 gift card and a free dozen doughnuts.

The winning work of art will be on Basha’s bakery shelves for the month of June and will be available for special order after that.
